The Pentagon Joint Service Honor Guard presents the color at the ground-breaking ceremony to mark the beginning of work on the Pentagon Memorial at the site where 184 innocent lives were lost when terrorist hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 crashed on Sept. 11, 2001. The memorial will have cantilevered benches with reflecting pools underneath each one in memory of each victim of the attack. Fifty-nine memorial units face one direction, 125 face the other distinguishing victims on board the plane from those who lost their lives inside the Pentagon. In addition 80 Paperbark maple trees will shade the 1.93 acre site which is scheduled to be completed in Sept. 2008. DoD photo by Petty Officer 1st Class Chad J. McNeeley, U.S. Navy (Released)
